Today we are beginning a meaningful and long-term project. We are launching a research, digital archive and book project that aims to carry the scientific legacy of Prof. Dr. Saffet Süray — one of the Republic's first-generation mathematicians — into the present day.
Why Prof. Dr. Saffet Süray? Because many valuable academics who left important marks on Türkiye's history of science are, unfortunately, not recognized as much as they deserve. Yet science is not only about making new discoveries; it is also about understanding the people who laid this country's scientific foundations and carrying their legacy into the future.
Prof. Dr. Saffet Süray is one of the leading figures of the Republic-era generation that forged strong ties between mathematics, astronomy and applied sciences. I believe the story of this generation — which contributed to the development of the mathematical thinking underlying satellite communications, radar systems, space technologies and astronomy — deserves to be far more visible.
This project will not be merely a biographical study. Our aim is to comprehensively document Prof. Dr. Saffet Süray's life, works and scientific legacy through verifiable sources, archival documents and family contributions used with permission — and, at the same time, to bring that legacy together with today's vision of space and technology.
In the first phase we aim to build a digital archive and website, and afterwards a comprehensive book.
Throughout this process, I will gladly welcome the contributions of anyone who knew Prof. Dr. Saffet Süray, worked with him, or holds photographs, documents or memories in their family archive.
Science grows as it is shared. And scientific heritage continues to live on to the extent that it is preserved and passed on to new generations.
